About Us
Ko Wai Mātou
Within the history pages of the Rāhui Pōkeka community, accounts are written of a subtribe (hapū) whose lives were intrinsically connected to maunga, whenua and awa. A community built across east and west riverbanks promoted connection rather than division to live, cohabit and work together as mana whenua and tangata tiriti for the greater good as pre-set by our predecessors. Leadership was abundant, prosperity was shared, unity in community was the social norm.
Despite the current challenges we face, here in the cradle of the Kīngitanga authentically known as Rāhui Pōkeka, Matawhaanui Trust embrace our resilience much like our forefathers did by applying the necessary stamina and creativity to affect positive impact across social, environmental, economic, and cultural health and wellbeing for both living and future generations to come.
From the eye of the swirling storm that is upon us, Matawhaanui Trust can see, understand, and defiantly accept the challenge to reclaim our posterity through purposeful relationships, collective efforts, and intentional action to reinvigorate, reclaim and invest in Rāhui Pōkeka as our tūpuna did, street by street, whānau by whānau.
